My Story

This year I am running the London Marathon to support Carers UK and also in memory of my Grandad, Graham Davies.

Every year, 4.3 million people become unpaid carers. This is the equivalent of 12,000 people a day. Carers UK’s mission is to give information and advice on caring to these individuals so they are able to manage better at home, at work or wherever they may be.

Anyone from any background and of any age can be a carer and each carer’s experience is unique to their own circumstances. This resonates with me personally as my Grandad received care at home during the final few years of his life. This began with my Grandma looking after him as his health began to deteriorate. She became a carer without even realising; she would help him to wash and get dressed, drive him and accompany him to all his hospital appointments as he became more dependent on her.

However, in the final three months, he had carers attend his house around four times a day. They went above and beyond to ensure that he always felt comfortable, and I know that he massively appreciated this. Not only did this give help to my Grandad, it also took much of the burden away from my Grandma. She simply could not have coped on her own and my family are eternally grateful for each carer's support, kindness and understanding at such an emotional and difficult time.

I am grateful to Carers UK for giving me the opportunity to run my third marathon. Once again, I am ready to put my all into the training so that I can try and better my previous time of 2:56:43. I hope that I will be able to make my Grandad proud and raise some vital money so that unpaid carers across the country can be supported.

Please give generously if you can.

Thanks

Jack
